Gage Mullican Williams hails from Joplin, MO and has been studying design in order to pursue a career as a freelance graphic artist/production designer. In 2019 he spent an inspiring five weeks in Scandinavia with a focus on studying 35 mm black and white film photography. On a typical day, he enjoys working on new designs, listening to new genres of music and talking to his lovely cat, Wilson.
My capstone project involves creating an identity system for a musical group. Primarily, I wanted to create a functioning and clean design for the band that still managed to evoke a style of controlled chaos. I felt it was important for the viewer to feel a connection with the design as well as to the band’s very experimental music which, much like an astronaut, is always exploring new vistas.
The inspiration for this branding stems from the eras of grunge and garage rock yet also incorporates some post-modern styling. I also wanted to symbolize my control of the limited space by utilizing a minimal layout in my design. Joining the imagery around the typeface was the biggest challenge as the two needed to work together but this challenge suited me as I enjoy using very expressive styles of graphic drawing.
